We'd like to introduce you to a very special band who stopped playing together on August 9th 2000
"the greatest band the world never got to see"
Richard James McConnachie 1981 - 2000 The Original Do-Nutter
Richard McConnachie - Songwriter, guitar, lead singer, Laura Murray - keyboards, backing vocals. Paul McDermott - bass, backing vocals Graham Brogan - drums,
Richard thought it would be a good idea to form a band that made original sounding, energetic, refreshing and ultimately, fun music. |
What They Achieved August 27th 1998 First gig, Fury Murray’s, Glasgow Donut then continue to tirelessly play the Glasgow gig circuit including Nice ‘n’ Sleazys , King Tut’s and the 13th Note Venues etc Late 1999 Donut’s first break : a TV appearance on late night programme “Young, Gifted and Broke”. It should be noted that Graham Brogan left the band on amicable terms shortly after this and was replaced on drums by Liam McAteer Donut win the Nice ‘n’ Sleazys Battle of the Bands, during which they attract a hardcore group of fans, known as 'Do-Nutters". |
On Wednesday August 9th 2000, Richard died from a condition known as cardiomyopathy; a tragic end to such a promising young life. Being that Richard was the central creative influence, this signalled the end of Donut, the greatest band the world never got to see. In June 2001, a compilation CD of the band was released. You can listen to and buy "Let Me In, I'm Starving" by clicking here Donut appear on BBC Radio Scotland’s Sunday night “Beat Patrol” program and play a live session of 3 songs. Big name band support slots ensue, including one of Richard’s favourite bands: Clinic. Unfortunately the radio appearance was one of the last things the band were to do together |
| This is not a sad story. It is a celebration of the success of Donut | ||
